One small thing
Often, being brave enough to say what you want "out loud" has the magic effect of making it feel more real.

One small thing
The newsletter for busy people
Hello there,
Happy New Year! I hope that you all had a moment to rest over the festive break. I had a good mix of being manically busy with slower, doing very little days. I will admit to binge watching "Shrinking" on AppleTV and "Vigil" on BBC iPlayer. I will not be making Nigella's date and marmalade Christmas cake again next year (because "sadly" I am the only one in my family who liked it). I was forced to buy extra brandy cream to go with it and only have two slices left to eat!
I don't know about you, but I have been bombarded with so much messaging over the last two weeks: make resolutions, don't make resolutions, New Year new you, New Year same you, get ready for an amazing new start, or hunker down until winter is over.
It's all rather confusing isn't it? I suppose the good thing is that, no matter what you choose to do, it will be the right thing. Such a relief!
I wrote all about why I think New Year's resolutions are a waste of time last year. So now you know where I stand on that issue and you can read about it here.
Over the festive break, I had a couple of days to read, relax, and let my brain wander. I know where I want to go in 2024, but not how I am going to get there yet. I have got as far as getting most of the noise out of my head and into my notebook. There are lists of ideas and jobs on my to do list, but no concrete plans yet.
It could feel overwhelming, but right now, I am luxuriating in the freedom of possibilities. Just like being in a bath filled with warm water, deliciously scented bubbles, and a relaxing playlist on my portable speaker. I can sit and think and let my imagination get to work. This is one of the best things about the process of creating change. Not quite knowing what it is going to be yet, but getting clearer and nearer every day. Your ideas do not have to be perfect to start with; you can sit with things and then keep or discard them at will.
When you want to make a change it is important to spend some time deciding if it is really what you want. My clients often know that they want something to change but are not 100 percent sure what it is yet. And that is perfectly fine.
Coaching allows you the time and space to think and then try out ideas in a safe space. Often, being brave enough to say what you want "out loud" has the magic effect of making it feel more real. I define setting a goal as working out what you want your one BIG thing to be. It is much simpler to focus on one thing, that you really want, rather than a lengthy list of goals or resolutions! It will also make it easier to work out how you will get there in the long run.
When you define what you want your one BIG thing to be, it is important to consider these 5 things
Set a positive intention by focussing on what you want rather than what you don't want
Make sure that your one BIG thing is all about you
When will you know that you have achieved it?
Be specific and avoid vague intentions
Work out what resources you will need
I explain these concepts in more detail in my online course "Setting and achieving great goals." It has everything that you need to help you work out what you want your one BIG thing to be in 2024. It is only £40 and you can get to work immediately. You can find out more here.
Not ready to do the work yet? No problem, you can read more about setting goals in this post.

Coaching Prompt
"Have you done anything like this before?"
I bet you have. Think about what you did last time and how can you use your learning? Then you can think about what resources you already have in your toolbox.
3 songs long
I chose 3 songs for the playlist because it lasts for 10 minutes (ish). That 10 minutes is the perfect length of time for you to either listen, relax, do an exercise snack, walk round the block, or do anything you fancy to music (go wild with your imagination). You can listen to my playlist or make one of your own.
That's it for this week. I would love to know what your one BIG thing is going to be in 2024. Get thinking!
Love from,
