Dr Lucinda Homer Coaching
Hello there,
Are you exhausted, frustrated, a little bit bored and feeling stuck?
In my last newsletter, I wrote about how I developed a portfolio career and promised to give you some ideas about how to develop your own.
It can be hard to think outside the box when you are entrenched in your life and career, but it might be exactly what you need to do in order to get yourself out of a rut.
I tried several things, that were way outside my comfort zone, just to see what else was out there. I forced myself to go to a networking event and survived. I attended a workshop to find out about what a role on a board might involve and how to prepare a board CV. That involved giving my first elevator pitch, which was excruciating as the only doctor in a room of women with high flying corporate careers. I applied and was selected to be an MEP candidate, and learnt so much about myself including the realisation that I did not want to pursue a career in politics.
Putting myself out there and being open to new experiences helped me to see that I did not have to stay inside my self-imposed box. I saw that there were numerous ways to use my skills and so many opportunities - I just needed to explore and be brave.
You can develop a portfolio career within your current role, working in your profession in parallel but outside the organisation, or it can be something completely different.
All professions are different but there are themes that are common to all of them and this list may spark some ideas for you:

Teaching and Training
Do you enjoy teaching or training? You may be able to get involved in helping to educate the next generation in or outside your profession. It can be very rewarding and is also a two way process, you might learn new things too!
Wellbeing
Are you interested in supporting individuals to realise their potential through coaching or mentoring? Would you like to train as a mental health first aider? Does your workplace have a menopause awareness champion? Have you always wanted to be a yoga instructor or personal trainer? There are many ways that you can have a positive influence on the wellbeing of yourself and others both inside and outside the workplace.
Committee Member
If you are fed up with the status quo and brimming with ideas, you may like the idea of representing others, influencing policy, and making a difference. Are there any local or national committee roles that you would enjoy?
Joining a board
Have you thought about becoming a board member? There are many paid and non-paid roles available. Many different roles will suit your unique skill set and there are organisations to help you prepare for and secure a role e.g. Women on boards
Media
You may enjoy writing, expressing your opinions or sharing your expertise. You could write for your own blog, a magazine or journal. This could be with your professional expertise or based around a hobby you enjoy. Some publications will pay for your work and there are also ways to monetise a blog.
Academia
Do you have a desire to learn or specialise in something new? Maybe a diploma, masters degree or PhD is something that interests you. You may want to pursue a research interest and publish your work. Or you may wish to do something completely outside your profession like an interior design course, creative degree in photography or a subject that fascinates you.
Freelance or locum work
Do you like the idea of working for yourself and taking on extra contracts for work? If you have a public sector job, you may wish to try working in the private sector. This may be a great way to dip your toe outside your main job and see what it is like elsewhere. You can try it out and build your confidence without the risk of resigning from your main job.
Charity work or volunteering
This may not provide you with a second income but it might be one of the most rewarding things that you can do. There are so many charities that would snap up your skills.
Expert
Are you interested in becoming an expert in one area of your profession? Are there any training courses that might plug a skills gap? Gaining skills and refreshing your knowledge is an excellent way to ensure that you are ready to move up or sideways if the mood or circumstance takes you.
Extra role
Can you use your skills in a different setting or role at work? The variety may increase your enthusiasm for your main job and reignite a spark that you thought had long disappeared.
New Hobby
Is there something that you have always wanted to do? Do you want to learn or teach a language so that you can settle in your dream location? Or do you have a long lost hobby that you would love to revisit? Making time for something outside your job can often lead to meeting people and creating opportunities that you do not expect. Hobbies can spark ideas for new ventures and provide a fresh perspective on life.
This is not an exhaustive list but I hope it will inspire you to think about what you want to do or even just to explore the idea of change.

3 songs long

I chose 3 songs for the playlist because it lasts for 10 minutes (ish). That 10 minutes is the perfect length of time for you to either listen, relax, do an exercise snack, walk round the block, or do anything you fancy to music (go wild with your imagination). You can listen to my playlist or make one of your own.
That's it for this week. If you would like to explore how to take the next steps please book a call to find out how I can help you get unstuck.
Love from,
